OHIO — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking residents to refrain from driving impaired Sunday as they prepare for Super Bowl festivities.

“The Super Bowl is always a great time to gather with friends and family,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “If you do plan on going out to watch the game on Sunday, please celebrate responsibly and designate a sober driver.”

Last year during the Super Bowl, OSHP made 40 OVI arrests between Sunday at 6 a.m. to Monday at 6 a.m. During the same period, one person died in a crash, and it was determined to be OVI related. There were also 221 injury crashes, 22 of which were OVI related.

Troopers warned they will be cracking down on drunk drivers this year.

“Troopers will be working to remove impaired drivers from our roadways,” said Col. Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent. “Planning ahead and designating a sober driver protects you and others using our roadways from becoming a statistic of impaired driving.”

Witnesses to someone driving dangerously are encouraged to call #677.
