Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens with $44M to lead box office

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” opened to $44 million this weekend to lead the way at the box office, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The sequel to 1984’s “Ghostbusters” was directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, who directed that earlier favorite.

“Eternals” was a distant second with $10.8 million in its third weekend in theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.

“Clifford the Big Red Dog” was third with $8.1 million in its second weekend.

“King Richard,” the story of the tennis-playing Williams sisters and their father starring Will Smith, opened in fourth place with $5.7 million. “King Richard” is also available for home viewing on the HBO Max streaming service.

“Dune” was in fifth place with $3 million in its fifth weekend of release.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Venom: Let There be Carnage” ($2.8 million), “No Time to Die” ($2.7 million), “The French Dispatch” ($970,000), “Belfast” ($940,000) and “Ron’s Gone Wrong” ($888,000).
