CLEVELAND — Giant Eagle stores in Cuyahoga County will no longer offer single-use plastic bags starting April 22.

The announcement was supper by a county-wide ban on single-use plastic bags that was originally going to be enforced in 2020, but was pushed back due to the pandemic. Giant Eagle said customers can get paper bags for 10 cents a piece when checking out. Those using food assistance programs will be exempt from the 10-cent fee.

The grocery chain said it is offering incentives for customers to use reusable bags during trips. Giant Eagle will have a $10,000 sweepstakes for customers who use reusable bags. The company will also give away 100,000 reusable bags to customers in Cuyahoga County on Earth Day.

Giant Eagle said Cuyahoga County will join the Erie, Pa. area as the first two regions where Giant Eagle no longer utilizes single-use plastic bags. The grocery chain said it hopes to expand the initiative to other regions.

Giant Eagle has 470 locations, including more than a dozen in Cuyahoga County.
