On Sept. 20 Giant Eagle, Inc. announced an agreement with NRG Energy, which will provide renewable electricity to power the company’s central Ohio locations.
Giant Eagle has worked with Direct Energy Business, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, for over a decade. The company recently directed the NRG subsidiary to develop a renewable energy plan.
According to a Giant Eagle press release, the agreement will generate 60 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy annually, which is the equivalent to offsetting carbon emissions of more than 7,500 homes’ annual electricity use.
“Giant Eagle is committed to building stronger and healthier communities in the areas we serve, and sustainability is a key pillar in that effort,” said Giant Eagle Vice President of Sustainability Justin Evans. “This announcement brings us more than halfway to our ambitious goal of achieving 50% carbon neutrality by 2030, as we work toward a larger commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.”
Additionally, the grocery store states it recently replaced four of its diesel yard trucks with more environmentally conscious electric yard trucks.
“We see renewable energy purchases as a critical component in our efforts and are actively working to procure additional resources for our other markets in the coming months,” Evans said.
