Ohio State University has slightly improved its standing on U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of the best public universities, while its position is unchanged on the list of all national institutions.

OSU is now ranked No. 16 among U.S. public colleges, according to the new 2023 list, an improvement of one spot from 2022.

The school is still ranked No. 49 among national universities, the same as last year. But that’s still higher than where OSU had ranked in prior years.

The U.S. News rankings use 17 measures of academic quality to judge schools, including graduation and retention rates, social mobility, academic reputation, faculty resources, student
selectivity, financial aid and more.

While somewhat controversial in the higher ed sector, the rankings are widely used by prospective college students.

“The comparisons are useful for crafting a shortlist of institutions to examine more closely and may also highlight new options,” U.S. News says of its list.

OSU tied with University of Georgia in Athens for the No. 16 spot among public schools. The top public universities ranked by U.S. News were University of California at Berkeley and UCLA, which tied for the No. 1 place among public schools.

OSU’s rival, the University of Michigan, tied with University of Virginia at No. 3.

On the national list, OSU also tied for the No. 49 spot with the University of Georgia.

The only Ohio university ranked higher on that list than OSU is Case Western Reserve University, which took the No. 44 spot.

Other Ohio universities ranked on the national list include Miami University at No. 105, University of Dayton at No. 127, University of Cincinnati at No. 151, Xavier University at No. 166 and
Ohio University at No. 182.
