High School Blitz: Highlights, analysis from opening week of OHSAA playoffs

OHIO — The Ohio High School Athletic Association football tournament kicked off Friday night across the state. The playoffs will culminate with the state finals on Dec. 1-3 in Canton, Ohio.

In Friday’s OHSAA Game of the Week for central Ohio viewers, 11th-seeded Hilliard Davidson upset sixth-seeded Grove City 17-7 in Region 3 in Division I. 

The Wildcats improved to 45-32 in the all-time series between the schools by chewing up the clock, riding a strong rushing performance by Keevan Gibbon (26 carries, 142 yards, 1 TD). 

In the southwest Ohio Game of the Week, the ninth-seeded St. Xavier Bombers held off eighth-seeded Fairfield with a 42-28 victory in Region 4. The Bombers are in the postseason for the 14th straight season.

In the northeast Ohio Game of the Week, seventh-seeded Wadsworth easily avoided the upset by rolling past tenth-seeded Elyria 44-13 in a Region 1 contest. Running back Lance Glover Jr. had 22 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown to pace Wadsworth.
