LORAIN, Ohio — Three summers ago, the Lorain Public Library system introduced its most unique branch yet: The Little Library on the Lake.

What You Need To Know

  • The Little Library on the Lake opened three summers ago
  • The library provides fun beach activities for anyone to rent for free
  • It was made from a refurbished cargo container

It is a remolded 20-foot long, 8-foot wide, 9-foot tall refurbished cargo container.

Instead of checking out books, families are able to rent fun beach activities for free, like bikes, giant connect four, horse shoes, frisbees, jump ropes and much more.

Stephanie Brown helped open the lake library in 2020.

“Maybe some of the equipment is expensive, which is a barrier to entry for some people. Well, we can provide that so they can use it,” Brown explained. “Maybe some people just don’t want to haul down cornhole to the beach, so we make that easy for them.”

This unique branch of the library also offers educational activities every Wednesday at 2 p.m. for children.

Many of the activities will be STEM-related.

“I think providing these simple but still relevant activities is very helpful for kids and families to keep engaged throughout the summer months,” Brown said.  “[It will help] while they are waiting to go back to school.”

The Little Library on the Lake is open seven days a week, all summer long from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

All items are free to check out with a library card.
