COLUMBUS – Competition organizers are helping youth around the Midwest dance their way out of the pandemic. That’s especially since many of them spent the last year cooped up in their homes.

What You Need To Know

  • Teams from Ohio and Illinois are set to compete in the Midwest Battle Royale, a majorette dance competition
  • Sisters Camden Burrell and Lealoni Miller formed The Bucking Jewels during the pandemic
  • The two are passing on a passion and helping young girls form bonds of sisterhood

Burrell and Miller created the dance team after years of dancing themselves. Burrell said their mom was a coach and so this was just a natural progression for them.

“With my sister, I just knew it was what was made for us. Dancing is for us,” she said.

As many teams were folding during the pandemic, February 2021 seemed to be the right time to form their team.

Teaching 8- to 15-year-old girls how to dance, Burrell said the girls they’re working with have come a long way.

In the beginning, “they did not know each other at all and it’s like now, you wouldn’t even know that they did not know each other, because there’s the bond that they’re building,” she explained.

She also said many struggled with coordination and had never been exposed to certain movements.

“And now it’s just like they’re out here just dancing, … they love it, you know, even through the tears, the sweat,” Burrell said.

Saturday, the girls will compete for the first time in the Midwest Battle Royale, which will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Perfecting their dance routine for three different categories, Burrell is hoping when all is said and done that the girls will just do their best and leave everything on the dance floor.
