CINCINNATI — In an effort to celebrate Black Philanthropy Month, the Young Black and Giving Back Institute is putting on its annual Give 8/28 fundraiser to help Black-led nonprofits all across the country.

What You Need To Know

  • The Young Black and Giving Back Institute is hosting its annual Give 8/28 fundraiser
  • It’s a fundraiser to help promote financial support more than 270 Black-led and Black-benefitting grassroots organizations
  • Rosemary’s Babies Company in Cincinnati is one of the nonprofits participating this year
  • The money raised will help with their newest project called the Holloway House and Resource Center

Since 2016, Rosemary’s Babies Company in Cincinnati has helped more than 1,200 teen mothers and families with the resources they need to succeed. Nearly 30% of the teens served are homeless.

“When you’re pregnant as a teen there are a few options of housing or shelter housing or transitional housing that you can go to,” said Jaliah Oglesby, vice president of program delivery and impact Rosemary’s Babies Co. “But once you have your baby, there is nowhere in the tri-state area that can take you if you’re a minor.”

That’s why Olgesby and her team are working on the Holloway House and Resource Center in Cincinnati’s North Avondale neighborhood. The 6,000 square-foot building will help house teen mothers and more.

“It will be transitional housing for seven teenage moms and their babies and on our lower floors there will be a resource center for the North Avondale community and beyond,” she said.

But in order to open the new building by next year, they will need to raise $1 million for renovations and construction. Give 8/28 helps support more than 270 Black-led organizations like Rosemary’s Babies Co.

“We’re not just serving teen parents,” she said. “We’re serving everyone’s babies. These babies are all of our babies. So it’s very important and I love that Give 8/28 is highlighting Black-led nonprofits.”

Give 8/28 is an annual initiative on Aug. 28 by the Young Black and Giving Back Institute to help promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefitting grassroots organizations. So far this year, it’s raised more than $139,000.

Donations are taken through Aug. 31.

“African Americans have about a trillion dollars in buying power and imagine what we can do with that dollar if we give back to organizations that are helping the people that we serve,” she said.
