FINDLAY, Ohio — Jason and Amy Koomen adopted their three daughters from Ukraine, and over time, they developed a strong bond with the country and its people.

What You Need To Know

  • The Koomens donated and continue collect items for people in need in Ukraine
  • So far, their outreach raised more than $100,000 for equipment, food and medicine
  • The Koomen family covered its own costs for flights, hotels and food while visiting Ukraine

When the Russian invasion began, family and friends living in Ukraine reached out to Amy asking for food and medical supplies.

“We did get a humanitarian letter signed and sealed by the government of Ukraine. That gave us permission to bring items, medicine (and) medical care in. We got all (the) clearance we need at customs to bring these certain items in, humanitarian flights through airlines and we just kind of made it work,” said Amy.

Jason, who already hand-delivered supplies at the Ukraine border, said he’s overwhelmed by the generosity shown to the cause by strangers.

So far, their outreach raised more than $100,000 for equipment, food and medicine.

“For us, it was just a natural thing. Yes, we have the ties with our girls, but even without that, I think we look at that, and who they are as a country and a people — it’s just the right thing to do,” said Jason.

The Koomens said their outreach will continue until large-scale humanitarian efforts take over.

“There’s three specific cities that we’re taking it to: Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv and Odessa, and we’re delivering it based on their needs.”

While it’s been difficult to explain to their daughters what’s taking place in their home country, the Koomens hope by the humanitarian efforts, their children are learning a valuable life lesson.

“We’re just moms; none of us are doctors. None of us are wealthy or have any special skills, and I want the girls to know and all my children to know that if you really believe in something, you can find a way to make things happen,” said Amy.

The Koomen family covered its own costs for flights, hotels and food while visiting Ukraine.

They said medical equipment donations are needed, as well as food and medicine for residents.
