OHIO — The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck. It is responsible for producing hormones that regulate the nervous system, skin integrity, as well as heart, metabolism and brain functions.

Thyroid disorders can show up with a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, infertility and even a decline in vision.

During this Thyroid Awareness Month, Spectrum News spoke with Ossama Lashin, M.D., Ph.D., an endocrinologist at Cleveland Clinic, about functions and disorders of the gland.

“Thyroid hormone is very important for the function, development and growth … to every cell in the body,” said Dr. Lashin.

He also explained how to conduct a self examination of your thyroid.
