CLEVELAND — Investigators are working to determine what caused a chemical plant fire in Lake County Monday night.
According to the Madison Fire District, firefighters responded to a fire alarm sounding off at ChemMasters, located at 300 Edwards St. in the Village of Madison.
Madison Fire Chief Tod Baker said the team arrived at the scene to find “a fully involved building fire located on the north side of the property with materials outside the building also involved in fire.”
Workers quickly contained the fire to the structure of origin, as well as other builds and storage tanks that had been exposed, according to Madison Fire. Officials determined there was no risk of further exposure to surrounding residents, deeming an evacuation unnecessary.
Madison Fire recruited help from surrounding departments, including those in Perry, Leroy, Geneva, Thompson, Harpersfield, Concord, Saybrook, Painesville City, Painesville Township, Geneva on the Lake, Fairport, Willoughby and more. Lake County Hazardous Materials Team also came to the scene in case hazardous materials were involved.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The Lake County Fire Investigation Unit, the State Fire Marshall and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will be meeting on site later Tuesday morning investigate cause and origin and monitor for contamination concerns.
