The White House has begun referring to Russia’s moves into Ukraine as an “invasion” after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two separatist territories in eastern Ukraine and ordered troops into the regions.

The United States and a number of allies, including the United Kingdom and the European Union, responded to Russia’s moves by imposing sanctions – and rolled out more on Tuesday.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” President Joe Biden said on Tuesday. “I’m going to begin to impose sanctions and a response far beyond the steps we and our allies and partners implemented in 2014. And if Russia goes further with this invasion, we stand prepared to go further.”
