Live Updates: Maui releases names of 388 people still missing

Wildfires on Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui, fanned by strong winds and Hurricane Dora, destroyed a historic town and forced evacuations. 

The Maui Fire Department and Ocean Safety have 40 personnel searching the waters off Lahaina for human remains, according to a Department of Land and Natural Resources news release.

FBI officials briefed the public on its methods of identifying people in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. Special Agent Steven Merrill, in charge of the FBI Honolulu Division, said that there are multiple lists of missing people, some with incomplete information. He said that there are about 1,000 more still on the missing persons list; however, that number could change.
