Nearly two months have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian forces have withdrawn from the capital region of Ukraine to refocus on the eastern part of the country, but the images of what was left behind in their wake have sparked global outrage.
The U.N. human rights office says it has documented at least 2,000 civilian deaths in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the U.N., 4.5 million who have fled the country, the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. Overall death tolls in the conflict are unclear.
After Russian forces withdrew from the capital region of Ukraine, graphic evidence of deliberate civilian killings emerged, leading to growing international condemnation; Russia has denied the accusations and falsely claimed that the images were staged.
President Joe Biden for the first time last week referred to Russia’s actions in Ukraine as “genocide,” accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of “trying to wipe out the idea of even being a Ukrainian.” The president also last week announced $800 million in new military aid for Ukraine, including helicopters and artillery, to help Ukrainians prepare for an assault from Russia in the east.
