WAUKESHA, Wis. — An SUV plowed into a Wisconsin Christmas parade Sunday evening, leaving at least five people dead and at least 48 injured, according to Waukesha, Wisconsin, city officials.

39-year-old Darrell Brooks from Milwaukee is in custody. Investigators believe Brooks was involved in a domestic incident prior to the parade incident. Police are recommending five counts of intentional first-degree homicide for Brooks.

Online court records show on Nov. 5, Brooks was charged with resisting or obstructing an officer, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, disorderly conduct, bail jumping and battery. Records show $1,000 cash bond was posted Friday, Nov. 19.

Medical officials from the Children’s Wisconsin Hospital-Milwaukee said at least 6 children injured in Wisconsin parade crash are listed in critical condition, 3 others in serious condition. Two children of the 18 they are treating have been discharged. There are also three sets of siblings being cared for at their location.

At 4:39 p.m. CST Sunday, a red SUV was seen breaking through police barriers and speeding into the roadway where the parade was taking place in Waukesha. The SUV that was seen speeding through the parade has been recovered.

Chief Thompson added that there were no shots fired from Brooks while driving the SUV. A Waukesha police officer fired his gun in an attempt to stop the vehicle from fleeing. No bystanders were injured as a result of the officer’s shots.

The School District of Waukesha will not have classes Tuesday, Nov. 23 and will resume classes on Monday, Nov. 29.
