Medical helicopter crashes while en route to fatal accident in Butler County

MILFORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — At 4:08 a.m. Tuesday, Butler County Sheriff’s Deputies and EMS personnel responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Eaton Road, per a news release from the Butler County Sheriff Department.

An eastbound blue 1998 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling on Eaton Road and went into the intersection into the path of a gray 2013 GMC Sierra, which was traveling northbound on U.S. 127, according to the news release.

A rear-passenger, a 69-year-old woman from Richmond, Virginia, was ejected from the Silverado and pronounced deceased on the scene.

One front passenger, a 43-year-old female, was mechanically extracted from the same vehicle and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the release. The other two Silverado occupants suffered minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital.

The driver of the GMC Sierra was the only occupant of the second vehicle and was not injured. 

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

CareFlight responded to transport the seriously injured female passenger, according to the sheriff’s department. At approximately 4:58 a.m., the helicopter crashed while attempting to land at the scene and hit power lines. All three crew members in the helicopter were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to a statement issued by CareFlight, no patients were in the aircraft, which was being operated by Air Methods, and the crew members were able to safely exit the helicopter.

“Two of the three crew members onboard the CareFlight helicopter have been treated for non-life-threating injuries and released. A third is being evaluated,” CareFlight said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. 

The cause of the helicopter crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is processing both the car crash and the helicopter crash, and will be working with the FAA in regards to the helicopter crash, according to the sheriff’s department.

As of 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, the scene was still active and the roadway will be closed for the next several hours.
