MEDINA, Ohio — Matt Amodio’s streak of 38-consecutive wins on “Jeopardy!” came to an end Monday, but not after he amassed more than $1.5 million in winnings during his run.
Over the course of 38 victories, Amodio weathered a bevy of guest hosts and the brief tenure of Mike Richards to become one of the game’s most accomplished champions. His 38-game winning streak was the second-longest in the show’s history, behind Ken Jennings’ 2004 run of 74 wins in a row.
The Medina native was third in cash winnings during regular season play behind Jennings and James Holzhauer. Amodio has also secured a spot in the Tournament of Champions.
The majority of games during Amodio’s run were not competitive. Amodio had the lead going into Final Jeopardy during all 38 victories, according to The Jeopardy Fan, which tracks show statistics. In 32 of those games, Amodio has built an insurmountable lead going into Final Jeopardy, otherwise known as a “runaway.”
Monday started out like most of Amodio’s previous appearances. He held a sizable lead over his opponents after the Jeopardy Round. But Amodio fell behind in Double Jeopardy on Monday.
In third place in Final Jeopardy, Amodio missed the question allowing for Jonathan Fisher to become the new Jeopardy champion.
During his run, Amodio described himself as a “history nerd.” He is currently a Ph.D. student at Yale University.
In addition to being a Medina native, he previously attended Ohio State.
