COLUMBUS, Ohio — Angel Dewitt, 46, has only known the streets since she was 14 and says its not easy, but an outreach ministry is working to bring meals to her and others in need.

What You Need To Know

  • About 1,800 people are homeless in Columbus, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness
  • The ‘Take it to the Streets’ outreach ministry drops off meals to those in need
  • Angel Dewitt is one of many that the outreach helps

“Basically, the streets taught me everything I know,” said Dewitt.

But she’s not alone. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, about 1,800 people are homeless in Columbus.

Luckily for her though, Dewitt recently got off the streets two months ago and said while it has not been easy, she’s, “trying to live happily.”

“We don’t really eat too much,” said Dewitt.

But, as Dewitt has learned from the St. Aloysius Community Outreach Ministry, a little help goes a long way.

The ‘Take it to the Streets’ outreach team drives through downtown Columbus twice a week, dropping off hot meals and other essentials for those in need.

“We make probably a hundred meals a week,” said Sandy Bonneville, founder of ‘Take it to the Streets’ Ministry.

Bonneville started the outreach two years ago but said lately the need has gone up.

“It’s increased,” Bonneville said. “These folks have nowhere to go. A lot of shelters are full. They don’t accept dogs or cats.”

That has inspired Bonneville to help fight hunger one meal at a time.

“Don’t give up. Don’t give up. You’ve been strong. Things have got to change,” Bonneville said. “We’re trying to help you. Just don’t give up.”

And for those in need like Dewitt, it gives them hope.

“They’re the best,” Dewitt said. “They come out here. Everyone runs up. They’re there for us, and I appreciate them.”

The ‘Take it to the Streets’ St. Aloysius Community Outreach Ministry has made close to 5,000 lunches for the homeless community in the last two years.
