AVON LAKE, Ohio — A new business in Northeast Ohio is providing a place for people to unleash their inner artist — no experience necessary.

  • More information is available at themakerspacestudios.com

Melissa Jackson is a self-taught jewelry designer.

“This was a great way for me to kind of, like, de-stress and have something to call my own,” she said.

Her hobby grew into a small business.

“So many of my customers are from this area and I have seen them wearing my pieces out,” she said. “And it makes me feel so good.”

So good, that she wants to share her skills with others looking for a creative outlet by hosting a class at The Maker Space Studios in Avon Lake.

“I really truly think it’s going to help a lot of women come and reconnect and hang out,” Jackson said. “Have fun and learn something in a nice space for artists to come in and do their work and do their craft.”

The space invites artisans of all levels to pursue their passions, offering everything from pottery wheels to stained glass solder stations.

“We just tried to stock up on pretty much anything that people would want to use,” said The Maker Space Studios CEO Christine Scott.

In addition to tools, they also provide an area where creativity can flow freely.

“They need the space to work on it and maybe they have four kids at home, three kids, and they just can’t always spend an hour alone there,” said Lisa Bridenbaker, The Maker Space Studios senior partner. “Because somebody is knocking on the door, hanging on your legs.”

Artwork in progress can be stored on-site and experts will offer training on new techniques.

“We are judgment-free,” said Bridenbaker. “We are here to help. We’re here to let people explore and we really hope that people come and give us a try.”

“Art is therapy, and I believe that this is different because it’s expressive and it’s personal,” said Scott.

The women are empowering everyone to open up, one craft creation at a time.

“I think this will help a lot of people during such a hard time,” said Jackson.

The owners of The Maker Space Studios plan to host pop-up shops, classes, and other special events. You can find more information on their website.
