CLEVELAND — Pi Day is celebrated March 14 because the date has the same three numbers that begin the math term that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, but it isn’t just an occasion for math lovers, but also those who love the very popular dessert.

What You Need To Know

  • March 14 is Pi Day
  • The date, 3/14, is the same three numbers that begin the math term Pi, the Greek letter that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter
  • Mama Jo Homestyle Pies was one of the businesses celebrating Pi Day

Jenna Rabosyuk’s mother and uncle started Mama Jo Homestyle Pies in the early 90s. As someone who’s worked at Mama Jo for almost her entire life, she knows that people go all in for Pi Day.

“They take it very seriously,” said Rabosyuk. “And they get very upset, because there’s actually a National Pie Day, where it celebrates the actual dessert pie on Jan. 23 and it’s a hot topic on what’s the real pie day. So we actually celebrate two different pie days.”

Mama Jo in Amherst celebrated by selling certain pies for $3.14. Rabosyuk was happy to welcome back her loyal customers.

“There’s a lot of people that come in all the time that we recognize that have been here for forever,” said Rabosyuk.

Kristina Newbloom and Jeremy Gornall visited for the occasion.

They were happy to support local businesses and happily admitted they fell for the marketing idea.

“I think it brings the community together, it really does, everybody comes out to celebrate a common thing,” said Newbloom.

“And it just helps local businesses compete too, like, it’s a great marketing strategy,” said Gornall.

Rabosyuk said business is three-to-four-times busier than usual on the occasion. She said she’s happy and appreciative for the support.

“It’s very rewarding again to see the loyal customers coming in and once again choosing us to be a part of their celebrations and it’s just nice to see that people still come to us,” she said.
