OHIO — While the Christmas season can be a wonderful time of a year for many, others are stressed and overwhelmed, trying to provide toys for the children in their lives.

What You Need To Know

  • Several Ohio charities are seeing an increase in the number of families requesting toys, while donations are down
  • “Carols on Cleveland” is a holiday event in Columbus, serving the Linden neighborhood: Saturday, Dec.17, 1-4 p.m.
  • Families must register by Thursday, Dec. 15, to receive toys, food boxes and any health care services at the event
  • In Stark County, A Community Christmas is a volunteer organization that serves families in need, and provides toys for kids

Preparations are underway for the Carols on Cleveland event in the Linden neighborhood of Columbus (on Cleveland Avenue). In its second year, the event is aiming to serve children and families in the area.

“There’s a need for the community and there’s a gap,” says De Lena Scales, who is the primary organizer. “We wanted to make sure that Linden residents didn’t have to leave this community to get the resources that they need.”

In 2021, the event served about 200 families, but this year, the goal is to reach 500 families by collaborating with local groups, such as, We are Linden. Ralph Carter is one of the organization’s leaders who is encouraging residents to contribute whatever they can afford, given inflation and the economic effects of the pandemic.

“It’s challenging this time of the year,” says Carter. “I mean, we’re still feeling that wrath of you know, not not having enough.”

The number of requests for toys is higher this year in communities throughout Ohio.

In Stark County, a charity called A Community Christmas, works with Toys for Tots to provide toys for children of all ages. The organization has already held one large toy distribution this month and will hold two more events this week, ensuring that more than 600 children will receive toys.

Susan Hill, president of the charity’s executive board, says she’s grateful for the generosity of local residents.

“It depends on the donations to Toys for Tots,” said Hill. “Everything is dependent on what the community can do for us and what we can do for them.”

Statewide, dedicated volunteers of multiple organizations are doing their best to spread holiday cheer.

“You need all voices at the table,” said Scales. “Carols on Cleveland is an example of alignment and everyone coming together for a common agenda.”

Carols on Cleveland, in Columbus, is an exclusive event to help those in the Linden area. Families must register by Thursday, Dec. 15, to receive toys, food boxes and any health care services. The event takes place on Saturday, Dec. 17, 1-4 p.m.
