CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — Some families in northeast Ohio weren’t waiting until midnight to ring in the New Year.

  • Families gathered for crafts, activities and a balloon drop at noon
  • Organizers planned the event for kids to take part in celebrating the New Year without having to stay up past bedtime

Kiefer Schatz, 10, prepared to make some noise as he decorated a shaker made from paper plates filled with dried beans.

“We’re going to shake them at the end of the ball drop,” he said.

He said he was ready to leave the year behind.

“So we can try new things and experience new experiences,” he said.

Kiefer and his family gathered at the Geauga County Public Library Bainbridge Branch to celebrate Noon Year’s Eve with crafts, activities and a balloon drop at noon.

Midday is a more manageable hour for the kids to celebrate the holiday.

“I stayed up last year to midnight, but I don’t know about this year,” Kiefer said.

Meanwhile, Keifer’s little brother Gunnar was just thinking about the treat he picked out to eat for the special occasion.

“A snowman cupcake,” Gunnar said. “And they were very cute, I’m telling you, it’s very cute.”

The Schatz boys also were among the nearly 50 kids who got a jump start on the New Year.

“It’s really fun working with kids and it’s something fun to do in the afternoon with them when normally they can’t stay up late,” said Gaberielle Kisner, Geauga County Public Library youth services assistant.
