Ohio native makes Masters debut, heads to second round

DAYTON, Ohio — A 21-year-old who hails from Vandalia, Ohio made his debut in the Masters tournament Thursday and will play in the second round Friday. 

University of North Carolina junior Austin Greaser, who was in the second group off the first tee, made three birdies and five bogeys at Augusta National Golf Club Thursday, making a bogey on the opening hole. He sunk three birdies in the first nine holes, tying for first place, but then shot three bogies to finish with two over. 

 

He’s a junior on North Carolina’s top-10 ranked men’s golf team. During the first round, he paired up with previous Masters champ Mike Weir and three-time major champion Padraig Harrington. The three will tee off in the second round at 11:18 a.m. Friday. 

The Butler High School graduate earned his spot at the Masters in the 2021 U.S. Amateur. He also reached the 2021 Western Amateur semifinals. During the 2021 U.S. Amateur, he defeated four higher-seeded opponents but lost in the final to Michigan State’s James Piot.

According to the University of North Carolina, He has the lowest stroke average in Carolina history. He’s the only Tar Heel with a career average below 72.00. Greaser is currently ranked No. 11 in the world and No. 8 in the U.S., according to Golf Week rankings. Under the World Amateur Golf Rankings, he’s No. 23 in the world and No. 16 in the U.S.
