PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — Watching basketball is a lot more entertaining with voices behind it.
“A lot of people are jealous of the fact that I can do it and they can’t,” Nwaozuzu said. “Our school can do it.”
Goodman said Nwaozuzu convinced him to join him at the table, and he admits calling a whole game had some learning curves. They didn’t even know at first that this opportunity existed.
“The first volleyball game we called we weren’t good at it,” Goodman said. “But we’ve kind of figured it out.”
The school doesn’t have any large production trucks or television cameras. Instead, they livestream it online with cameras placed in the gym through a partnership with Your Sports Network. The network provides the equipment and pays the school to use it, so the company can use their games as advertising space.
YSN Founder and CEO D.J. Yokley said this helps schools as well since it creates game film.
“We’ve had kids that never would have been spotted without YSN that are now playing college basketball,” Yokley said.
Goodman and Nwaozuzu have to run the online scoreboard and handle some basic audio gear. Other than that, they create the atmosphere for viewers.
And that comes naturally when they can call a close game that goes down to the final minutes.
“It’s fun,” Nwaozuzu said after an electrifying call. “It’s good,”
“Probably the most electric game we’ve ever had,” Goodman said.
