The Secret Service said uniformed officers shot the intruder in the 3000 block of Garrison Street NW, in the Forest Hills neighborhood of the nation’s capital.

Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee III told reporters the ambassador and his family were home and called police after hearing windows being broken at the rear of the residence. When officers arrived, they encountered a man in his 20s or 30s holding a metal stake, Contee said.

The man moved toward the officers, who fired Tasers at him, according to the police chief. After the Tasers failed to subdue the intruder, two officers fired their guns, killing him, Contee said. The man, whom police have not yet identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers and no one inside the home were injured, police said.

Law enforcement officials said they did not have a motive for the break-in or if the man was aware that he was at the residence of an ambassador. MPD and the Secret Service are investigating.

On Twitter, the Peruvian Embassy to the United States said Ambassador Oswaldo de Rivero, “his family, the staff of the Residence and the secret service agents are safe, and the incident is being investigated by the competent authorities.”
