The identity of the man killed has not been released.

The incident took place at the corner of Superior Avenue and East 12th Street, less than a mile from FirstEnergy Stadium at 3:15 p.m. while thousands of fans were inside the stadium.

Williams said Sunday’s incident could have been worse.

“I think we’re extremely lucky that this was not at the conclusion of the Browns game. Would have been a few thousand (people) on the street,” Williams said.

Williams said that several citizens and two off-duty officers called the police, reporting that a man was holding and firing a weapon.

Williams said on-duty officers arrived and gave commands. Williams said that gunfire was exchanged and the man went down and later died.

Williams reported that there was some damage to a few nearby buildings.

The chief added that additional details would be released on Monday.
