CLEVELAND — Pride month kicked off June 1 and this weekend cities across the United States are celebrating.  In Cleveland, for instance, people got a chance to enjoy “Pride in the CLE”, an event hoping to bring together people of the LGBTQ+ community and the community’s allies.

What You Need To Know

  • Pride in the CLE brings together people from the LGBTQ+ community and their allies
  • Saturday was the return of the event after two years of COVID
  • Several booths represented different organizations supporting the LGBTQ+ community

Devinity Jones, who works at the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, believes  both the Pride march and Pride month are extremely important.

“This is making a stance and continuing that fight,” Devinity says. “That we are here. We are individuals that just want to be loved and just want to be a part of something and have a sense of belonging.”

A variety of booths represented different organizations gathered to support “Pride in the CLE”. Whether they showed up to offer services, pride apparel, or just to support, these organizations say their aim is to make Cleveland a safer place for the LGBTQ+ community.

“This is just one of those avenues you can come to and be wholeheartedly supported with some community partners and some good strong allies,” Jones said.

For Jones, “Pride in the CLE”, along with Pride month in general, is a celebration, but also a reminder to continue to fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

“This is just the continuation to let that city know we are queer, we are gay, we are here. Please give us equality,” Jones said. “We are still the same as everyone else.”
