OHIO — Memorial weekend is only a few days away, and will kick off a summer full of travel. Although, overall travel may look a little different this year.

What You Need To Know

  • Memorial weekend highway traffic will still be busy
  • Passenger numbers in airports are expected to be close to 2019 numbers
  • Safety is the most important thing to consider when travelling this weekend

Sgt. Brice Nihiser, with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, is unsure what the long weekend will look like in terms of travel.

“Whether there are a bunch of people out, whether there aren’t a bunch of people out, it doesn’t really matter to us,” he said. “At the end of the day, our goal is always going to be providing safe roadways for whoever’s on them.”

With travel, Nihiser just wants people to stay safe and arrive at their destination safely.

“Just make sure that you’re following the speed limit, wearing your seat belt and just being courteous with other motorists too,” he said.

The roads will be busy, but so will the airports.

John Hogan, deputy chief marketing and air service development for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, is optimistic about this summer’s travel.

“Right now, we’re looking at the start of our 100 days of summer. Memorial Day kicks off this busy summer period,” Hogan said.”We anticipate loads that will be close to 2019.”

Hogan said he expects about 2.8 million passengers for the 100 days of summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

“Plan ahead,” Nihiser said. “Leave early and make sure you get there safely.”
