Shelter in place order lifted for Cincinnati residents as crews battle barge fire overnight

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The shelter-in-place order was lifted around 7 p.m. Thursday for Cincinnati residents within a half mile of 5495 River Road as crews continued to battle a barge fire on the Ohio River.

  • Residents within a half mile of the fire were urged to stay inside and turn off their HVAC
  • Vehicular and pedestrian traffic was restricted in the area due to the heavy smoke
  • Diesel was the source of the fire, but no other hazardous materials were known to be involved

Residents were encouraged to stay inside and turn off their HVAC. The U.S. Coast Guard was working with Cincinnati Fire to assist with cleanup and protect the environment from being impacted as well.

Cincinnati Police and Cincinnati Fire were on the scene.

Diesel fuel was the main source of the fire, creating a large amount of dark smoke, but they said no other hazardous materials are known to be involved. 

No injuries were reported.

This is the second incident involving barges on the Ohio River in the last two days. Several barges became loose near Louisville, Kentucky early Tuesday morning. As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no indication of leaks or risk to drinking water
