BEAVERCREEK, Ohio – As the region braced for its second major winter storm of the week, snow removal crews across Greene County mobilized to ensure they had the staff and resources to keep up.

When the storm hit around 1 a.m., plows were already out treating streets, parking lots and sidewalks, so that by the time Beavercreek was coated in snow, they were ready to make quick work of the wet, thick slush.

What You Need To Know

  • 2.2 inches fell in Beavercreek.
  • Snow removal companies were out since 1 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The storm transitioned into sleet and rain around 8:30 a.m.
  • Streets and sidewalks were treated to prevent re-freezing.

The National Weather Service estimates between 2 and 2.2 inches fell in Beavercreek before things started switching over to sleet or rain between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

That gave snow removal crews a chance to catch up, clearing the slush from streets, sidewalks and parking lots, allowing businesses to open and preventing a buildup of standing water that could freeze should temperatures drop overnight.

For Jack Wourms, the owner and operator of PWI Landscaping, the concern for this storm wasn’t about how much would fall, but about how long his crews would have to be out at work.

Staff had two days of hard work over dealing with Sunday’s snowstorm and Wourms said many had been up since 9 p.m. last night prepping for Wednesday’s.

“Really just staying awake is a big one, and then dealing with how it’s going back and forth between rain and snow, just there’s a lot of key factors to deal with and making sure all your properties are done on time and making sure they can get in there to open,” he said.

Wourms said his crews wrapped up early Wednesday afternoon to rest during the break in the storm. He said they remained on standby through the rest of the day in case things froze again or the rain turned back to snow.

Contractors with PWI and other snow removal groups around the region also treated the blacktop and sidewalks with salt to prevent re-freezing or further accumulation should snow resume later in the night.
