On Monday, President Joe Biden’s new program, Uniting for Ukraine, began. It’s intended to make the process of applying for asylum in the U.S. more streamlined for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

For the past month, refugees have been able to enter the U.S. under humanitarian parole, but now that pathway has closed.

Thousands of Ukrainian refugees were able to cross in to California via Tijuana while the port of entry was open.

Many Ukrainians were en route to Mexico when the Biden administration made the announcement made. Some people arrived just after the closure, and now must look for alternate routes.
