Students wrecked car outside Thomas Worthington aims to raise awareness about safe driving

Students at Thomas Worthington High School showed up from holiday break to quite the dramatic sight: one of their classmate’s crumpled up cars sitting next to the driveway.

“It was a high speed crash, pretty serious. It took Columbus fire quite a bit to get the kids out of the car and into the hospital,” Thomas Worthington High School Principal Pete Scully. “Luckily, the injuries were pretty minor compared to the damage to the car.”

According to a police report, the driver was speeding and lost control of the car. He hit a tree and ended up rolling the car twice. Miraculously, both boys survived.

According to the accident report, the diver was going 80 in a 45.

The parents asked if the car could be towed to the school as a lesson for all.

“They really wanted to remind kids about taking their time, buckling up, important things to stay safe,” Scully said.

After a lot of talk in the hallways, Scully told students why the car was there.

“A few weeks ago, a couple of students were involved in an accident and first responders were surprised there were no fatalities,” he said.

The car will only be at the school for a few days, but Scully is hoping the jarring sight leaves a lasting impact on students.

“We talk a lot about safety, fire drills, active shooter drills. Sometimes things like driving slow around campus and to and from school is more important for personal safety than the things we practice the most,” Scully said.
