CINCINNATI — On Thursday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed Ricky Shiffer, of Columbus, Ohio, as the suspect who reportedly tried to breach the FBI Cincinnati office Thursday morning in body armor and with a firearm.

Shiffer reportedly tried breaking into the office with an AR-15-style rifle and a nail gun. He fled north on I-71 where a state patrol a trooper spotted Shiffer in a white Ford Crown Victoria and began to pursue Shiffer.

The incident caused a portion of I-71 to be closed to traffic between state routes 73 and 68 as the standoff occurred, but it reopened to traffic just after 2 p.m.

Once the situation reportedly was contained to the specific perimeter on Smith Road, traffic once again was allowed to travel the roadway.

The patrol said gunfire was exchanged as Shiffer exited his vehicle in a rural area on Smith Road near Van Trees Road in Clinton County on Thursday afternoon.

At 3:42 p.m., Shiffer reportedly raised a gun at law enforcement and troopers fatally shot him, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said at a news conference Thursday evening.

No officers or bystanders were reported as injured.
