FINDLAY, Ohio — The suspect in the shooting of an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was captured by law enforcement officials Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Robert Tramaine Hathorn, 42, was captured on County Road 223 near Trenton Ave. in Findlay. Hathorn’s vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban with a Michigan license plate, previously was recovered behind a business on County Road 140 near Township Road 89.

After a sighting of the suspect, a law enforcement search team converged on the location and captured Hathorn, who was positively identified, the Highway Patrol said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol thanked Ohioans for tips received during the search for Hathorn during the more than 12-hour manhunt.

Organizations involved in the search included: United States Marshals Service, United States Secret Service, Findlay Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Police Department, Fostoria Police Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, United States Border Patrol and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The search began after a state trooper was shot during a traffic stop in northwest Ohio.

Trooper Josef Brobst had pulled over a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 75 near Findlay Wednesday around 11:05 p.m. when Hathorn reportedly struggled with Brobst, grabbed the trooper’s firearm and shot him, according to the highway patrol.

Brobst was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital and his injuries were not considered life-threatening, the highway patrol said.

Brobst’s service weapon is in custody of the state highway patrol.
