OHIO — Living with kidney disease is difficult. While the treatment is lifesaving, it is also life-changing. Advances in home dialysis device technology are helping patients regain control of their lives. David Rush is one of those patients and he joined Spectrum News for an interview to raise awareness about kidney health and treatment options.

What You Need To Know

  • Kidney disease occurs when your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should
  • According to the National Kidney Foundation, 37 million American adults have chronic kidney disease, and millions of others are at increased risk
  • Home dialysis can help some people with kidney disease have a better quality of life

Rush, a musician, started dialysis at the age of 24 after being told he was in stage 3 acute kidney failure and had irreversible focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).

When he first started dialysis, he went to a center for treatment three days a week. Each visit lasted five hours. Rush said it felt like a part-time job. The husband and father of two now uses Tablo, a home dialysis treatment which he credits for giving him the flexibility to participate in more family activities and continue his career, which sometimes takes him on the road.

“It’s just allowing me to get that normalcy and independence back — that little bit of freedom back — feeling like I can make my own schedule and not have my life revolve around dialysis,” said Rush.
