OHIO — With a constant demand for the COVID-19 vaccine, some college students are getting a taste of what it feels like to hurry up and wait.

What You Need To Know

  • Gov. Mike DeWine announced last week that vaccines would be available for college students
  • Otterbein University received 2,400 Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses
  • Getting the vaccine on campus made it so that students wouldn’t have to worry about how they’d get a second dose if they didn’t live in state

After Gov. Mike DeWine announced college students could get the vaccine, many jumped on the opportunity. But some were met with disappointment as they realized it was going to be more of a struggle to get one than they thought. Now, with universities across the state are getting their own shipments of the vaccine, it’s making it easier for students to get one if they want one. Otterbein University received all its Johnson & Johnson vaccines in one shipment.

Zac Collins, 20, wasn’t sure he’d get one until he found students could get one on campus.

“I was having hard time finding somewhere close to campus that I didn’t have to drive over ran hour to find a vaccine,” Collins explained. He said every time he heard about places receiving vaccines, he’d try to get one, but the slots filled up so fast, and that whole process frustrated him. “They went so fast, like I felt helpless. Like I was doing all I could and it still wasn’t getting me the results I was hoping for,” he said.

Now that he’s received his shot, he feels like he can breathe a little easier, especially since he’ll be working with students. He said he’ll still proceed with caution, but he’s just so glad he doesn’t have to worry about tracking down a vaccine anymore.

Otterbein University partnered with the Westerville Fire Department to administer the vaccines.
