Thousands without power across northern Ohio after Thursday nights storms

OHIO — More than 198,000 Ohioans are without power as of Friday morning after powerful storms blew through the state Thursday night.

  • A line of storms with gusty winds hit the state shortly before midnight, spurring Tornado Warnings across northeast Ohio and down into north central areas, such as Wayne County
  • Winds as high as 75 mph were recorded along the Cleveland shoreline

Most of the outages are in northeast Ohio, including in Geauga, Lake, Portage and Columbiana counties.

A line of storms with gusty winds hit the state shortly before midnight, spurring Tornado Warnings across northeast Ohio and down into north central areas, such as Wayne County. 

According to the National Weather Service, winds as high as 75 mph were recorded along the Cleveland shoreline. NWS has also documented wind damage reports from across the northern Ohio region and parts of central Ohio near Wooster and North Robinson. 

NWS said it’s sending two crews out to survey damage, but exact locations and timing haven’t been announced due to “the extensive damage across the area.”

Power lines have been reported down in areas around Cleveland, and there’s been several reports of houses hit by trees, including areas like University Heights, Euclid and Brecksville.

There was also a partial building collapse reported at Lyman Steel in Warrensville Heights.
