WARREN, Ohio — Ahead of the May 3 primary, Congressman Tim Ryan, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in Ohio’s U.S. Senate race, raised $506,000 in the first 13 days of April.

What You Need To Know

  • Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Tim Ryan raised $506,000 in the first 13 days of April
  • The Democrat continues to lead the crowded Senate field in fundraising
  • Three Democrats and seven Republicans are competing for their party’s nominations in the May 3 primary
  • Several Republican candidates have poured millions of their own dollars into the race

The pre-primary filing period haul comes after Ryan topped the Senate field by bringing in $4.1 million in donations during the first three months of 2022.

“As the GOP Senate candidates continue to pump millions of their own dollars into tearing one another down and trying to distract from their extreme and out-of-touch views, it’s clear that Tim’s relentless focus on the very real challenges facing Ohio workers is resonating across the state,” said Izzi Levy, a spokesperson for Ryan’s campaign.

Between April 1 and April 13, Ryan’s campaign reported receiving donations from more than 3,000 new donors. The average online donation was $35.20 and 97% of contributions were $100 or less.

Ryan, who has represented northeast Ohio in the U.S. House for nearly two decades, entered the Senate race in April 2021 and raised roughly $13.5 million from supporters since.

In the four financial quarters of 2021, Ryan brought in $1.2 million, $2.3 million, $2.5 million and $2.9 million in contributions.

In the first quarter of 2022, he raised an additional $4.1 million, which his campaign said was “the most ever for a U.S. Senate candidate in Ohio at this point in the cycle.”

Of the five major Republican candidates in the race, only one, former state treasurer Josh Mandel, raised more than $1 million from supporters in the first three months of the year.

Ryan’s main Democratic opponent, attorney and organizer Morgan Harper, raised just $328,000 in the first quarter of 2022.

Ryan’s fundraising numbers stand out because several of the Republican candidates have largely self-funded their campaigns.

To date, investment banker Mike Gibbons has poured $16.4 million into his campaign; state senator Matt Dolan has invested $10.5 million; former Ohio GOP Chair Jane Timken has loaned her campaign $3.5 million; and author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance has put $700,000 into his bid.
