OHIO — February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the U.S., yet many families may not realize tooth decay is preventable — and in many cases reversible — with a good oral care routine. 

Dr. Amr Moursi, president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, said brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day can reduce the risk of cavities.

“And it’s not all about sugar and sweets and candy,” Moursi explained. “It really is about snacking, how often any food or drink goes in the mouth. That’s really what parents should be paying attention to…children in my practice that get a lot of cavities are really the snackers, not necessarily the ones with a sweet tooth.”
