CLEVELAND — Mary Meng stands out because she stands tall.
She is 6’5″ to be exact. She said she hasn’t dunked a basketball yet.
“Last time I tried, I dunked a tennis ball,” Meng said.
She gets double-teamed on most possessions, so there’s a drill just for her, where she learns to play against two defenders at once.
“It definitely gives me confidence when I’m facing that in game to remind myself that I can score still,” Meng said.
She’s one reason Midview is heading to the state final four for the first time.
“It’s every senior’s dream,” Meng said. “I just feel blessed enough to have that dream realized.”
Meng has only played two seasons for Midview. Last year she set the school’s single season and single game record for rebounding. She then broke those records in 2022.
She played at a private school for her freshman and sophomore year. The towering senior is averaging 16 rebounds per game, but those numbers don’t mean as much as winning a state championship to finish her career.
“We put two numbers up,” Meng said. “I’d love to put up a banner.”
After this season, Meng will play basketball for Division 1 Bowling Green next winter.
