Leaders of both Germany and the United States have committed to send battle tanks to Ukraine as a show of support.

Meanwhile, in Ohio, Ukrainian natives are watching as the war’s anniversary draws near.

For Anastasia Didenko, it’s been been very surreal.

“It’s been a year and it doesn’t feel like it’s been such a long period of time,” said the Walsh University student.

Didenko said she’s been trying hard to focus on her studies in North Canton, but finds herself distracted daily by what her family is going through nearly 5,000 miles away in Ukraine.

“It’s been very hard,” said Didenko. She said she talks with her family in Ukraine every day.

Didenko said that while her family has become “used to air raid sirens and explosions,” the past year for her loved ones has been downright grueling, especially for her father, who is a soldier.

“It’s scary to go on and live a life when you never know where the bomb will land next. You can never know,” she said.

Feb. 24 marks one year since the war in Ukraine began, with countries across the world vowing not to cease support.

The German government said it plans to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, while the U.S. is planning to deliver 31 Abrams in the coming months.

“Putin expected Europe and the United States to weaken our resolve. He expected our support for Ukraine to crumble with time,” said President Joe Biden at a recent press conference at the White House.

Didenko said this support from countries for Ukraine is crucial.

“We have to stop this, and how else will we stop this without weapons and help from other countries,” said Didenko. “If Russia won’t be stopped right now, it will only get worse, not just for Ukraine, but for everybody else in the world.”
