Updates: More than 20,000 COVID-19 cases in Ohio schools

Every Thursday afternoon, the Ohio Department of Health releases updated COVID-19 cases involving students and staff. The Department of Health says weekly case counts include full-time or part-time students and staff members who have tested positive or been diagnosed with COVID-19. Staff members include teachers, administrators, support staff and coaches, the state says. 

On Jan. 13, schools reported to the state a record 16,704 new COVID-19 cases among school students and 4,712 new COVID-19 cases among staff. 

The two weeks prior, the state reported 2,851 cases among students and 935 new cases among staff the week of Dec. 30 and 3,181 student cases and 1,862 cases among staff the week of Jan. 6. The previous saw declines as students were out for the holidays.

Schools reported a total of 7,901 cases among students and 1,820 cases among staff for the weekly report released Dec. 23.

Since the start of the school year, there have been 131,172 cases among students and 28,178 cases among staff.

The state of Ohio will next update its dashboard on Jan. 20.
