CLEVELAND — The USS Cod Submarine Memorial in Cleveland’s north coast will hold a remembrance ceremony for the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.

The event will include a wreath casting, taps and deck gun salute. The USS Cod Submarine Memorial is located at 1201 N Marginal Rd.

The Pearl Harbor attack killed nearly 2,400 U.S. servicemen on Dec. 7, 1941. Dozens of those who were killed have been recently identified after a new initiative launched by the military started to analyze DNA and bone fragments of those classified as “unknowns.”

Most recently, on Dec. 1, the remains of an Ohio sailor who died during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor have been identified, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced. The agency said Buford Dyer, 19, of Barberton was among the 429 who died on the battleship USS Oklahoma.

According to the U.S. federal government, 2,335 members of the U.S. armed forces and 68 civilians were killed and 1,178 people were injured in the attack on Dec. 7, 1941. Of those killed, 2,008 were members of the Navy.

According to the Ohio History Connection, three Ohioans, Rear Adm. Isaac Campbell Kidd of Cleveland, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Robert R. Scott of Massillon, and Seaman 1st Class James Richard Ward of Springfield were awarded Congressional Medals of Honor. They were among numerous Ohioans killed in the attack, the Ohio History Connection said.
