MIDDLETOWN, Ohio —  Volunteers in Middletown built 50 beds for disadvantaged kids who often have to sleep on the floor.

What You Need To Know

  • Premiere Health and the Rotary Club of Middletown recruited volunteers to build the beds
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Butler County organized the event
  • Volunteers range in age from high school students to senior citizens

Premiere Health and the Rotary Club staged a Community Bed Build day, partnering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The national nonprofit organization teaches people how to build beds for families and children in need.

“We bring our own tools and supplies and organizations cover the cost of the beds,” said Mike Watkins, the lead volunteer for Sleep in Heavenly Peace in Butler County.

“If we’re not trying to help somebody else, then what’s the point? It’s about people helping people,” he said. “If we get everybody involved doing it, maybe things’ll be a little bit better.”

Volunteers ranged in age from high school students to senior citizens.

“I learned how to use a sander for the first time and it was pretty cool,” said Mason Lovy, 16, a student at Lebanon High School.

“It’s great work they’re doing, and it’s something I never really thought about,” Lovy said. “I think it’s a great idea.”

Each bed gets branded with the initials of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. More than the past four years, volunteers have built and delivered more than 2,000 beds in Butler County, Watkins said. He said the organization has given 100,000 beds to kids who need them across the country.
