OHIO — It’s officially November, and it may be worth preparing for the winter months before the season arrives.

Every year, AAA shares tips to stay safe on the road and at home. Ohio is among the top 15 states that are considered the most dangerous for winter driving, according to a survey from the analyst site MoneyGeek. The website analyzed data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for 2017–19.

Ohio placed at No. 4 with a “Final Winter Danger Score” of 66 out of a scale of 1-100. Michigan is considered the most dangerous, coming in at No. 1 with a score of 100.

Avoiding accidents on the road

  • Deer accidents tend to increase between fall and winter. Stay alert always, especially at dusk and dawn when they are most active. “If you see a deer, don’t swerve, don’t speed up and do apply the brakes,” AAA warns.
  • If caught in a snowstorm, slow down, increase following distance and break before any turns. Inspect your vehicle by checking for cracks in the windshield and that your headlights are working properly.
  • Check the weather ahead of time. If a storm of some sort is coming, give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination.
  • Get your checked for any potential leaks, weakened breaks or any other issues that could create issues.
  • Consider keeping these items in your car for emergencies: Spare tire, chains, a snow shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, a bag of sand in the trunk for added weight, flashlights, blankets, portable cellphone charger and snacks.

Avoiding accidents at home

  • Shoveling snow can present its own share of dangers, depending on your activity level. AAA warns to know your limits, can your time and dress warm.
  • Falling icicles can lead to head injuries, so avoid walking underneath them as much as possible.
  • Depending on the weather, it’s possible pipes can freeze or power could go out. Make sure to have an emergency kit with everything you need, such as flashlights, food, bottled water and first-aid supplies.
