2 People Injured in Shooting at Akron High School Football Game

AKRON, Ohio — Akron Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who opened fire at a high school football game Thursday night, injuring two people.

At about 8 p.m. during a Firestone versus East game played in the Ellet Stadium, the suspect produced a hand gun after arguing with one of the victims, a 19-year-old man, according to police.

The teenager was shot in the arm, and a 40-year old woman was shot in the leg. They were taken to Akron City Hospital. Police say neither injury is life-threatening.

The suspect is described as a Black man, 17-20 years old, wearing a tie-dye shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes, police say. He fled the scene.

The game was suspended following the shooting.

“We are grateful there was no one more seriously hurt tonight at the City Series football game at Ellet CLC,” Superintendent David James said in a statement. ”The shooting that occurred inside the stadium is great cause for alarm, and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”

Akron School Board President Patrick Bravo also expressed concern for the victims.

“This was an act of violence brought right into a football stadium with parents and children out to enjoy the return of fall sports,” he said in a statement. “As a community, we must work together to figure out a solution to gun violence. Our children deserve much better. remove extra space Our community deserves much better.”
