Market Day has been a tradition in the Highland Square neighborhood since 2014. This one-day-only market brought hundreds of visitors to the area to eat, shop and listen to music.

Many Markey Day visitors were drawn to the Julia Belle’s seasonings booth.

Sitting behind the booth was Tanya Green, who owns Julia Belle’s Seasonings.

Green sells seasonings, rubs and mixes based on her mothers old recipes.

“My mom was from Georgia and they came up here as part of the great migration from the south,” Green said. “She was a true southern cook.”

When Green’s mother passed away in 2015, she found something priceless while sorting through her belongings.

“There were all of these recipes and some of them were so old, the paper was so thin if you blew on them it would just fall apart,” she explained. “Some of them were even my grandmother’s.”

Before she started her seasoning business, Green knew that she had something special with these recipes.

“I woke up one morning at about 2 a.m., that’s when I do my best thinking,” Green said. “Something just said like why don’t you go back through them because there might be some things in there you can package and maybe sell.”

This is how Julia Belle’s Seasonings was born.

“Julia Belle was my mom, so this is actually her legacy,” Green said.

Now Green’s business has taken off and she has fans all over the country.

“Now it’s not a secret, and I don’t care,” she said. “Now she is out there and I feel like her legacy continues on.”

On Sunday, Julia Belle’s Seasonings gained dozens of new fans during the Akron Honey Market Day where Green was invited to be a vendor.

“She would be amazed, she really would,” Green said. “If you knew my mom, she was this really quiet person, so she would be like totally amazed to know that so many people found her stuff and to know she had something that so many people wanted.”
