CINCINNATI — A three-day cultural celebration is set to take over Cincinnati.

The 33rd Annual Black Family Reunion Celebration continues through Sunday, Aug. 22.

The event, inaugurated in 1989, seeks to bring community members, consumers and corporations together to focus on the historic strengths and values of the Black family.

The celebration began Friday morning with a special BFR Kickoff Event and followed by a Live Speaker Series in the evening.

On Saturday, festivities continue with a parade at Avondale Town Center and Urban Concert Series at Sawyer Point Park with special guests, Dru Hill. On Sunday, guests can enjoy a Gospel Concert Series featuring Darwin Hobbs and James Fortune. Admission to both concerts is free.

Other events include a food truck rally, back to school supply giveaway, live jazz performances and more.

Last year, the celebration was scaled back due to the pandemic. BFR Executive Director Tracy Artis said while they are excited to be back in person, there will still be precautions in place.

“We want people to return to the park but we want them to be safe,” said Artis. “We are encouraging people to wear their mask in the park, to social distance in the park and COVID-19 vaccines will be available for those wanting to get vaccinated at the health pavilion.”

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Steadfast and Strong.”
