CLEVELAND — After the Browns trimmed their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, the Browns invited 10 players back to continue practicing with the team.

What You Need To Know

  • The Browns made their final training camp cuts on Tuesday, reducing the roster to 53 active players
  • The Browns signed 11 to their practice squad on Wednesday, including 10 who were on the training camp roster
  • The only newcomer, Nick Mullens, was cut from the Eagles’ training camp
  • Mullens started in 16 NFL games for the 49ers from 2018-20

In total, the Browns added 11 to their practice squad on Wednesday, including a player cut by the Eagles.

Since the Browns are carrying just two quarterbacks on the active roster, Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum, the club signed Nick Mullens to their practice squad. Mullens was pressed into action two of the last three seasons to fill in when Jimmy Garoppolo has been sidelined with injuries.

He was released after the 2020 season by the 49ers and picked up by the Eagles during training camp.

Mullens started half of the 49ers games last year, compiling a 2-6 record. During his 2020 campaign, Mullens threw 12 touchdowns but was also picked off 12 times. He finished the season on the injury list.

He also started half of the 49ers contests in 2018, winning three out of eight games.

Mullens joins the Browns’ training camp roster alongside 10 others who spent the preseason with the club. On Tuesday, Kevin Stefanski told reporters he was hopeful to return a number of the players cut to the practice squad.

Once players are cut from a training camp roster, they are free to be signed to any team’s active roster.

The Browns will hold one more practice on Thursday before having a league-mandated three-day break starting Friday. The Browns return to practice next week in preparation for their season opener against Kansas City on Sept. 12.

Browns running back Nick Chubb said Wednesday he liked how the team’s offensive performed during training camp.

“I think the biggest thing was building off of last year,” Chubb said. “We found out we can be a good team with how we played last year and winning 10 games. I think just for us coming here, building off of that momentum, keep things going, fix things – the small things, the details – get better at that and come out here and work every day.”

Browns training camp roster:

  • DE Porter Gustin
  • RB John Kelly
  • LB Elijah Lee
  • S Jovante Moffatt
  • QB Nick Mullens
